I was approached to undertake the renovation of Umma House in Lamu. The client wanted the works to be cost efficient and in keeping with the Lamu methods of construction.
Before the intervention some time was dedicated to the testing of an appropriate whitewash. By appropriate I mean the ratio of White cement and lime in the wash. The idea was to retain permeability whilst applying a semipermanent treatment.
After we found the adequate ratio and application method, we selected the specific walls to whitewash. Our intention was to create a sense contrast through a planar and sometimes volumetric composition.
The result was a sort of 3D mosaic stitching Old and New.
